9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  9/11 CANDLELIGHT VIGIL, Skinner Memorial Chapel
You are welcome to stop by during the day to light a candle and take time for quiet reflection as we remember all those affected by 9/11, terrorism, violence, and war around the world.


10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  INTO THE ARBORETUM SERVICE PROJECT, In front of the Recreation Center
You will gain familiarity with the Carleton Arboretum and build community within your New Student Week group by planting trees in the Arboretum. Please wear clothes that can get dirty including long pants, closed-toe shoes, socks, and rain gear if needed. This event happens rain or shine. Bug spray and gloves provided. Feel free to bring a water bottle. Sponsored by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) and the Arboretum.


1:00 - 4:00 p.m.  MUSIC AUDITIONS, Various Location
Students with music auditions should receive an email from a faculty adviser with details.


1:00 - 5:00 p.m.  CHINESE LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAMS
Students will not need all of this time. The written exam will take place promptly at 1pm, and details of the follow-up oral exam will be announced at the written exam. All parts of the exam will be in the LDC (signage will be available). Students will likely not test the entire time slot.


11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  BRUNCH WITH YOUR NEW STUDENT WEEK GROUP
New students should check with their New Student Week Leader for their specific dining time and location.


2:00 - 4:00 p.m.  RECEPTION WITH PRESIDENT BYERLY: PART 1 (Groups 1-21)
You’re invited to Nutting House, The President’s residence, where Alison Byerly will greet you as you enjoy dessert and mingle with other first-year students. You will receive specific information from your NSW Leaders, as arrival times will vary. Please wear your NSW name tag for admittance.


4:00 - 6:15 p.m.  CLUB SPORT ATHLETE CONCUSSION BASELINE, Gould Library 206
Interested in playing club sports such as Ultimate, Rugby, Lacrosse, Hockey? If so, first-year club sport athletes should complete baseline concussion testing. This initial test will be used for reference in evaluating any head injuries that may occur. All potential athletes are strongly encouraged to attend. Stop by to take the test and for a brief concussion information training. Choose from one of the following time slots listed below (they are identical).

  • Session #1: 4:00 - 4:45 p.m.
  • Session #2: 4:45 - 5:30 p.m.
  • Session #3: 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.

4:00 - 6:00 p.m. RECREATION CENTER OPEN HOUSE, Recreation Center
Stop by to take a tour and enjoy a variety of activities. Gauge your mood and choose the event(s) that best suit you.

  • Fitness Center Orientation: 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
    Get a great start on balancing a healthy lifestyle before classes start by taking advantage of a free orientation to the Fitness Center in the Rec Center led by our LifeStyles Personal Trainers. Stop by one of these sessions to learn your way around and get comfortable with the workout equipment.
  • Climbing & Bouldering: 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
    Are you a first-time or experienced climber? Doesn’t matter! Come learn how to climb, boulder, and belay (and what those terms actually mean) at the Rec Center’s Climbing Wall and Bouldering Cave. Climbing staff members will be there to teach and direct you.

5:30 - 7:30 p.m. DINNER WITH NEW STUDENT WEEK GROUP

9:00 - 11:00 p.m. ALUMNI RELATIONS TRIVIA NIGHT, Recreation Center
Come alone or bring your roommate, and we'll randomly assign you to a trivia team to make new friends and compete for fun prizes. Questions will range from Carleton history to current events. Trivia has a rich history at Carleton, from Late Night Trivia for students to Nationwide Trivia for alumni across the country. Just bring your thinking cap and your sense of fun!
