BSA Minutes – 1/19

  1. Sumo Movie – Student Activities wants to sponsor a movie with BSA during Black History Month. Our top 4 suggestions were: Freedom Song, The Great Debaters, Rosewood, and Do the Right Thing.
  2. T-Shirts! - As I said in the e-mail, the theme is perseverance, and if you have ideas for a related quote or image, send them to JP (perkinjp) by FRIDAY.
  3. White Privilege Conference – Is in the spring. But we need to raise money for it this term, so we're thinking about a crepe sale or Krispy Kreme doughnut sale in Sayles during 6th week. (Most of our money will come from CSA and the Dean's Office).
  4. We Speak! - Will be held Friday, Feb. 25th (8th week) in the Concert Hall. Some student groups that we'll have performing are the African Drum Ensemble, the Jubilee Singers, and the Accidentals (an a capella group that sings Bob Marley's “Redemption Song” very well!) If you have other ideas for student groups, let us know! You should also start planning your own acts + we're looking for entertaining emcees, in case you're interested!
  5. CUBE – St. Olaf's BSA wants to collaborate with us, potentially on a photo exhibition in Freedom House featuring archived images from BSA's events in previous decades. This event will at least partially overlap with...
  6. Spirit Week – Held during 8th week (so the week leading up to We Speak, Feb. 25th). We're hoping to table in Sayles with some food samples, play music by black artists over the Sayles sound system, put table pamphlets around Sayles, create buttons in honor of Black History Month to distribute around campus, take lots of picture for the website (if you like to take pictures, we'll get you a camera from PEPS!), and make the 25th a day where everyone on campus either wears their BSA shirt or a purple t-shirt/clothing. Cool!
  7. 12:30 Sunday Brunches at Burton – Jewel informed us that Isaiah (a hall director) wants to get this tradition started, so feel free to join in this Sunday!
  8. Hot Cocoa and Movie Night – will be at 7 on Friday, Jan. 28th in Freedom House. More details to come!
  9. Fun! - Will be had at BSA's social event this term, which will be Saturday, Jan. 29th from 1-3 in the afternoon . Karaoke, games, and snacks! (We'll let you know the location next week).
  10. Poster Campaign – Ray has a really cool idea about starting a poster campaign about stereotype threat, in which people could have their pictures taken, as well as a caption about how they've been affected by stereotype threat. This will be done soon, in preparation for a convo speaker who's going to be speaking on the topic. Talk to Ray (nelsonr) if you want to participate!
  11. Sustainability and Diversity – Is the discussion topic of tomorrow night's Farm House Dinner. This is a pretty informal opportunity to talk about interesting subjects and get a good free meal. 6:30 at Farm House TOMORROW (Thursday). Feel free to e-mail me (henryl) if you have any questions about it.
  12. Come Support the Swim Team! – and more importantly, BSA member Anne, in the final home swim meet of the season. 1:00 on Saturday at West Gym!
  13. LGBTQ in the Minority Community – We had a really engaging discussion on this topic, and it was a great ending to a productive meeting.
