Laura Silber ’82 directs strategic communications and public affairs at the Open Society Foundations, an international grant-making network.  With its headquarters in New York City and branches in 37 countries, Open Society Foundations financially support civil society groups around the world, with a stated aim of advancing justice, education, public health and independent media.  They work to build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people; seek to strengthen the rule of law, respect for human rights, minorities, and a diversity of opinions, democratically elected governments, and a civil society that helps keep government power in check; help to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights; implement initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media; and build alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information.  Working in every part of the world, the Open Society Foundations place a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities.  Silber plays a leading role in advocacy for human rights and the rule of law, both nationally and worldwide.
