Sports Information Job Opportunities/Descriptions

Preference will be given to candidates available to work all three terms during the 2013-14 school year, but several sports info workers participate in off-campus study programs and/or collegiate athletics each year, so this is not a requirement. Positions will be paid at the standard wage rate for Carleton's student work.

Sports Photographer

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks photographers to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. The position is responsible for all aspects of photography for the sports information office. Work will be used on the Carleton College Website, game programs, other athletics publications, local area newsprint publications, and Internet news sources. Candidates must be able to work under tight deadlines, be organized and detailed-oriented, and be willing to work non-traditional hours, often including nights/weekends.

Duties include, but are not limited to: taking photographs at games, practices, and events; editing photos; uploading images into web content system to create online galleries. Photographers may use the department’s Nikon D3 or Nikon D300 digital cameras (lenses: AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G, AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G, and ED 300mm f/2.8). Students may use their own gear in addition/instead of department equipment. Experience with advanced camera equipment, Photoshop, or other publishing software preferred, but not necessary.

Sports Writer

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks writers to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. The main responsibility of the position is to write, edit, and publish recaps following home AND away athletic events. This often requires working nights/weekends, depending on the sport(s) to which the writer is assigned.

Additional duties may include writing content for the athletics Website and other publications (season previews, features, online biographies and hometown releases). Project management on one of the department’s publications could also be included. Superior writing and editing skills are a must. Excellent organizational and task-oriented skills are also required. Candidates should be available to work most—if not all—home events for the sports they are assigned to cover.

Video Producer - Features

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks video producers to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. Candidates will be responsible for packaged video production feature stories about Carleton College teams and student athletes. Candidates must be willing to do paid training and be committed to assignments. Candidates with prior experience and background in Final Cut Pro and associated classes from CAMS preferred. Previous sports video experience is helpful but not necessary, but prior experience with video editing is required. Candidates must be extremely detail-oriented and willing to occasionally work non-traditional hours, often including nights/weekends.

DEMONSTRATION OF VIDEO PRODUCTION SKILLS--LIKELY THROUGH ONLINE WORK SAMPLES--REQUIRED TO APPLY. Workers may also be assigned to help with live coverage of athletic events. Additional hours will be available to plan, edit, set up and take down equipment.

 

Photojournalist - Features

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks photojournalists to work up to 10 hours per week on packaged video production feature stories about Carleton College teams and student athletes. Candidates will work with a Video Producer on projects and be responsible to collecting footage during select athletic events, practices, and other times as assigned.

Assigned hours include time to prepare for productions (set up and take down equipment). Candidates must be willing to do small amount of paid training and be committed to assignments. Candidates must be extremely detail-oriented and willing to occasionally work long, non-traditional hours, including nights/weekends.

 

Video Producer - Broadcasts

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks video producers to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. Candidates will be responsible for producing live video webcasts of select Carleton College varsity athletic events using the NewTek Tricaster as well as the preparation of on-screen graphics for use during the broadcasts. Additional hours will be available to plan/prepare for broadcasts in addition to set up and take down of equipment. Candidates must be willing to do paid training and be committed to assignments.

Prior experience with broadcast production is strongly preferred but not required. Candidates must be extremely detail-oriented and willing to work at select on-campus athletic events, usually scheduled for nights/weekends.

 

Camera Operator - Broadcasts

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks camera operators to work up to 10 hours per week on live video webcasts of select Carleton College varsity athletic events. Candidates will also assist with set up and take down of broadcast equipment. Prior experience with broadcast production is preferred but not required. Candidates must be willing to work at select on-campus athletic events, usually scheduled for nights/weekends.

 

Broadcaster

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks student broadcasters to serve as play-by-play announcers, analysts, and commentators at athletic events during broadcasts streamed over the Internet. Separate broadcast crews will be hired for soccer, volleyball, basketball, and baseball/softball. Candidates must be well spoken, be able to adjust in a non-stop, ever-changing environment, and have thorough understanding of the sport(s) they are broadcasting. Candidates must be willing to do paid training and be committed to assignments. Additional hours will be available to prepare for broadcasts as well as the set up/take down equipment. Previous sports broadcasting experience is preferred but not necessary. Candidates must be extremely detail-oriented and willing to work nights/weekends at select on-campus athletic events. Candidates must be available to work most—if not all—home events for the sports they are applying to cover. Office Worker

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks office workers to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall, winter, and spring terms. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: writing/updating content for the athletics Website, historical/statistical research, producing game day publications for distribution at athletic events, photo archiving, and general office work. Strong writing/editing skills, organizational/task-oriented skills, accuracy, and attention to detail are required, as is the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. General knowledge of sports required. Candidates will work weekdays with schedules setup around class and other time conflicts.

 

Statistician

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks statisticians to work approximately 5 hours per week recording/tabulating statistics at a variety of athletic events. (Sports that need coverage include football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball.) Candidates must be extremely detail-oriented and have thorough understanding of the sport(s) to which they are assigned. Candidates must be willing to do paid training, be committed to assignments, and willing to occasionally work long, non-traditional hours, including nights/weekends. Additional hours will be available to set up/take down equipment at games. Candidates must be available to work most—if not all—home events for the sports they are applying to cover.

 

Game Operations - Baseball/Softball

The Carleton Sports Information Department seeks game operation workers to handle a variety of duties at baseball and/or softball home games. Candidates will serve as public address announcer, operate the scoreboard, and play music over sound system between innings. Previous experience not required.
