Athletics is an integral part of the student experience at Carleton: Extraordinary excellence and individual learning are inseparable. Your pursuits on the athletic field will complement and enhance your experience in the classroom. Team competitiveness and personal growth are both possible here–you'll be challenged to perform at your highest level while competing against teams in one of the nation's toughest conferences. You'll also learn from a first-rate coaching staff, follow cutting-edge training programs, and utilize state-of-the-art facilities. And you'll find that your athletic experience at Carleton will serve you well beyond Northfield.
As an NCAA Division III institution, Carleton fosters athletic accomplishment while placing sports in a larger perspective. Practice schedules are determined by academic schedules, not vice versa, and your class work is rarely sacrificed for athletics. Carleton's trimester system allows student-athletes to participate in study abroad programs, independent and collaborative research projects, and community service, and even to excel as multiple-sport athletes. Carleton offers no athletic scholarships–financial aid is based on demonstrated need–so renewal of aid is not contingent on making a varsity team. You can be assured that your teammates are qualified students and are commiteed to the sport simply for their love of the game.
