NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a matchup of the two squads that shared the 2012 MIAC regular-season title, Branden McGarrity’s (So./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) first goal of the season gave the Carleton College men’s soccer team a first-half lead. The Knights, however, could not make it stand up and dropped the 2013 conference lid-lifter to Gustavus Adolphus College, 2-1.

The loss was the first of the season for Carleton (3-1-2, 0-1 MIAC), while Gustavus (4-1-1, 1-0 MIAC) ran its unbeaten streak to four matches.

In the 20th minute, Trent Elmore (So./Bloomington, Ind./Phillips Exeter Academy) served the ball into the box, and McGarrity headed it into the right side of the goal. It was his 20th career goal, tying McGarrity with Wes Elfman ’11 and Miles Silbert ’12 for eighth place in Carleton history.

The lead was short-lived as Gustavus’ Zach Brown curled a left-footed shot inside the far post less than a minute later. Brown broke the deadlock with his second goal of the contest, slotting a shot home following a corner kick.

The tough, physical contest featured a total of 40 fouls and a pair of yellow cards charged to the Gusties. The visitors enjoyed a 13-8 edge in shots and a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.

Carleton’s homestand continues with a 1 p.m. match versus Saint Mary‘s University on Saturday, Sept. 21. Live stats and live video will be available via Knights Online.
