NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- John Fox (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Marshall) headed home a service from Sam Hayward (Sr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) in the third minute, and that was enough scoring for the Carleton College men’s soccer team as the Knights—playing in front of a large, energetic crowd—bested Grinnell College, 1-0.
When these programs met in the 2014 season opener, the Knights prevailed by the same score, but in that one the game-winning goal came late in overtime. This time around, Carleton (3-2) used the early goal by Fox to carry the team to victory.
The Knights out-shot the Pioneers 12-4 and owned a lopsided 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) registered two saves in posting the squad’s third straight shutout.
The Knights will play under the lights for a non-conference contest at Luther College on Tuesday, Sept. 15. That match is slated for 7 p.m. with a link to live video available via Knights Online.
