Knights roll past Crown

By Eli Inkelas '20

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s soccer team picked up its second consecutive victory as the Knights rolled to a 4-0 victory over host Crown College on Tuesday.

Carleton (3-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, when Mark Roth (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) centered the ball, and Kohl Sparrman (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount), waiting  near the penalty mark, calmly tucked a one-touch shot into the bottom left corner of the goal past the diving Crown goalkeeper Justin Lao.

The Knights struck again just before the end of the half, when striker Riley Phelps (Sr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) dashed down the left side, weaving and winding his way into the box. A defender tripped Phelps from behind, and the referee pointed to the spot. Moments later, Phelps slotted home the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season and the 2-0 lead going into halftime.

An acrobatic effort from Sparrman ensured that the visitors would keep the momentum going in the second half. Andrew Younkins (Fy./Beaverton, Ore./Westview) provided beautiful service on a free kick from the right wing, depositing the ball at the feet an onrushing Sparrman. The sophomore forward, who played the hero in the Knights’ overtime win at Simpson last week, redirected the ball home for the 3-0 lead.

Mikkel Sawyer (Fy./Red Wing, Minn./St. Paul Central) concluded the goal scoring for the Knights, finishing off an assist by Trevor Freeland (So./DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) in the 77th minute.

Carleton was solid on the defensive end once again, and behind the goalkeeping of Aidan Mullan (Jr./Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) the Knights posted their second shutout of the campaign

Carleton will host Augsburg College in the Knights’ MIAC opener on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 3:30 pm. A live video webcast will be available via Knights Online.
