GRINNELL, Iowa – After playing a full 90 minutes of regulation without a deciding goal, Jordy Cammarota (Sr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) handed the Carleton College men’s soccer team an overtime victory over Grinnell College with a 22-yard laser to the upper left corner of the net.
Carleton (1-0) controlled much of the pace of play, outshooting Grinnell (0-1) 14-4 over the course of the match. The Pioneers’ keeper Isiah Tyree managed to make six saves, however, keeping Grinnell in the match.
Carleton controlled the run of play in the extra period, taking the only three shots of overtime plus a pair of corner kicks. The goal came off an assist from Will Schifeling (Sr./Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) in the 98th minute. Schifeling laid the ball off for Cammarota, who took a controlling touch before firing the game-winning rocket with his right foot.
The Knights next take the pitch against Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. on Wednesday, Sep. 3, at 7:00 p.m.
