Knights Clinch Playoff Spot as Cammarotas Lead Carleton Past Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Goals by brothers Reed Cammarota (Jr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and Jordy Cammarota (Sr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) led the Carleton College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Concordia College on a beautiful October afternoon.

The result keeps the Knights (7-6-2, 5-2-1 MIAC) in a tie alongside Gustavus Adolphus for third place in conference standings and clinched an eighth straight trip to the postseason for Carleton. With two matches remaining in the regular season, the Knights can still finish anywhere from first to sixth in the standings.

In Saturday's contest, Carleton struck quickly, finding the back of the net barely 30 seconds into the match. Reed Camarota played a long ball to Danny Leal (So./Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) along the left wing, and Leal carried the attack toward the end line. When Cobbers keeper Ben Glogoza came out to challenge, Leal sent a pass back toward the top of the six-yard box. The delivery was initially behind Branden McGarrity (Jr./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) but Reed Cammarota ran onto the still rolling ball and slotted home a shot into the open net.

Buoyed by the early lead, the Knights’ defense limited Concordia (2-13-1, 1-6-1 MIAC) to just one shot on goal in each half.

While the score remained 1-0 until late in the match, Concordia’s chances for a comeback were reduced when Nick Koerbitz was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the afternoon.

The Knights broke through once again in the 83rd minute. McGarrity perfectly placed a pass where Jordy Cammarota, who was on a diagonal run through the Concordia defense, could run onto it. Cammarota’s one-touch shot from just inside the 18-yard box tucked inside the far post for his team-best eighth score of the season.

Keenan Smith (Sr./Madison, Wis./West) registered a pair of saves in posting his fifth shutout of the year.

The Knights homestand continues on Tuesday, Oct. 28 when Carleton hosts the University of St. Thomas for a 3:30 p.m. affair. Live video/stats of the match will be available via Knights Online.
