Department Updates

June 13, 2017

The Office of Health Promotion was very excited to receive news in May that Carleton's application for a suicide prevention grant was funded! Many thanks to all the Student Life offices and other campus partners who helped put the successful application together. We look forward to working with everyone in the coming years to improve student mental well-being, decrease stigma associated with mental illness, and increase our capacity as a campus to help students who are struggling.

The Academic Support Center (ASC) would like to congratulate the winners of the Carleton Travel Writing contest, which Renata Fitzpatrick co-organized with Mikaela Auerbach of OCS and the Global Engagement Initiative, and which was generously funded by the Dean of Students Office. Top prize went to Raelynne Benjamin-Bevis '18 for "The Mountain." Second prize: Pallav Kumar '18 for "A Mouthful of Apricots." Third prize: Veronica Child '18 for "My Budapest Mom."

TRIO/Student Support Services is excited to welcome four new TRIO Peer Leaders for the 2017-2018 school year! We celebrated the end of the school year with our End-of-Term Picnic and Senior Open House, and we look forward to connecting with alums at our TRIO Alumni Reception in mid-June.

The Career Center staff continues to help students with preparing for the upcoming summer months. Students who received internship funding attended an internship orientation to help them make the most of their experience. A separate event featured a panel of three Carleton students who successfully completed internships the previous summer; each student discussed their experience and offered valuable insight to help prepare first-time interns with transitioning from the classroom to a professional setting. Seniors who attended the Senior Showcase were informed about career services available to alums.

The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) would like to thank all those who attended our annual Senior Celebration and give special recognition to Alumni Relations and Dean Livingston for their work in making this program a success. We have also spent time reflecting on Speak Up, our annual community event for survivors of power based personal violence, and the community that gathered for this event.

May was very busy for Dacie Moses' House. We hosted our end of the year picnic and graduation brunches. Spring term brunches have stayed steady hosting 50-70 students, community members, families and alumni. Our guestroom was booked much of May and we also  found time to put in 3 raised beds for a kitchen garden. Our summer residents and handypersons are ready to get going with summer.  Visit us in the summer for homemade ice cream and great brunches with our own produce.

Residential Life is winding down the closing of the buildings and now at the start of summer break housing.   Around 115 students are remaining on campus for the summer in Musser Hall, as these students are either working on campus or are participating in a nearby internship. This summer, we also look forward to welcoming our new Area Director, Steve Schauz to the Goodhue/Evans area. Thank you again for the assistance and feedback from all involved in our search process.
